What would it cost to go electric?

Compare changes to the way you heat your home, make hot water or get around. Start with the whole household, or check the running cost of one replacement.

Your household, now and after an upgrade.

Try different heating, hot-water, cooking and vehicle choices, then see how solar or a battery changes the estimate. The tool opens below. Results are indicative and depend on the model’s assumptions. This page stays with Leading.

Rewiring Aotearoa’s household calculator

Start with Location under Your home. Choose Otago or Southland / Murihiku if that’s where you live, then check the appliances against what you actually use.

Loading it connects your browser to Rewiring Aotearoa. They operate the calculator and handle your entries under their privacy policy. Leading doesn’t receive your entries or results.

About the calculator and your privacy

The calculator uses Rewiring Aotearoa’s NZ assumptions and may use cookies or analytics. You can use the comparison below without connecting to them. Read Rewiring Aotearoa’s privacy policy (opens in a new tab).

The whole-household tool models batteries alongside solar. For a property without suitable solar, see how we assess battery-only storage.

Leading’s quick comparison

Check one change against your own tariff.

Use figures for the same job over a full year. For example, compare your present hot-water cost with the electricity a proposed hot-water heat pump is expected to use.

This estimate runs in your browser. It includes usage charges only. Keep the cost of installation, servicing, any changes to fixed charges and finance separate.

How the comparison works

Expected electricity use × tariff in cents ÷ 100 = annual electricity cost in NZ dollars. For example, 2,500 kWh at 30 cents costs $750 a year. Against a current annual running cost of $1,200, that is $450 less at those inputs.

Your next replacement

Which decision comes first?

Write down which appliance or vehicle is likely to be replaced first, when you use it and what else you might add later. If you’re renovating, tell us when the walls or ceiling will be open. That can be the best time to allow for a future circuit.
